Fronted by the beautiful and very talented Marie-Claude, ‘Mademoiselle et son Orchestre’ play up-tempo funky jazz blues with a Quebecois twist. Together with her band they perform their own original compositions together with covers of jazz classics from France and America, singing in French, English & Chinese. Marie-Claude is a force of nature on the stage singing up a storm and she always gets the whole crowd dancing.

Many people know Phillip Spencer the owner of the Nan Luo Gu Xiang restaurant, Luo Gu. What many people don’t know is that he also has a secret sideline playing the guitar! Philip plays great covers of classic songs from Bob Dylan to Leonard Cohen, as well as his own haunting Dylan-esque compositions with storyteller lyrics. From time to time he can be found gracing our stage when we can pull him away from his restaurant!

Live Music: “Lions of Puxi” – The Shanghai sensation live in Beijing

Unless you have been lost in the hutongs for the past few months, you would be have hard pushed not to have seen the YouTube video from “Lions of Puxi” where they have taken Sting’s “Englishman in New York” (see below) and given it a Shanghai make-over, with hilarious results! The Lions will be heading to Beijing this March for a one week tour so be sure not to miss them when they play at Ginkgo on Friday 13th March. Free Entry!

The Lions of Puxi are a pride of musicians from other habitats who saw a gap in the Shanghai music scene and took a bite. These handsome predators create a funky reggae style groove over unexpected songs, lyrics or rap. Sometimes in English, Sometimes in French but don’t be alarmed when you reccognize an English song and realize that its sung in Chinese!
