New Draught Beer: “Stella Artois” – The best selling Belgian beer in the world

Stella ArtoisWe are pleased to announce that we are now offering Stella Artois on draught at Ginkgo. Stella Artois is the flagship brand of Interbrew, and the best selling Belgian beer in the world.

Stella Artois is an elegant, cultivated lager with 5.1% alcohol content, brewed from the very best ingredients based on experience gained over the beer’s long history starting in 1366. It is a lager with a characteristic taste, body and pleasant bitterness that distinguishes it from other international lagers. A beer for true connoisseurs – that is Stella Artois.

The history of Stella Artois dates all the way back to 1366. The chronicles of that year say that the city of Leuven enjoyed not just flourishing trade and commerce, but also a booming beer business as well. One of the breweries that paid taxes to the city of Leuven that year was the “Den Hoorn” brewery. Another factor in the city’s prosperity was the University of Leuven, which was founded in 1425 and whose students quickly gained a reputation for being beer lovers.

On 15 June 1717, the “Den Hoorn” brewery was sold to Sebastien Artois. Later, it was taken over by his son Adriaan and grandson Leonard. From that moment on, the name Artois is associated with the City of Leuven and its brewery. Stella obtained its name in 1926, when the traditional beer brewed in celebration of Christmas was especially sparkly, and therefore was christened as “Stella” – the Latin word for “star”. Stella soon became very popular, not just around Christmas, but all year round.

From tonight onwards enjoy Stella Artois on draught at Ginkgo:

50cl – 45 RMB (Happy Hour – 38 RMB)
33cl – 30 RMB (Happy Hour – 24 RMB

Drink Spotlight: Pimm’s No. 1 – The quintessential English summer drink

Pimm'sNothing beats a glass of Pimms on a hot summer’s day! The British beverage is almost as much a tradition as the cup of tea, and in the Summer months the drink is downed by the gallon, popular at sporting events like Wimbledon fortnight and Henley Reggata.

Origin and History of Pimms
In the early 1840s, James Pimm, landlord of an oyster bar in London’s financial district began selling a health tonic called Pimm’s No 1 Cup, the ‘cup’ being a contemporary reference to the tankard in which a drink was served. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, James Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion. Patrons would eat his fresh oysters and then down a chaser of Pimm’s. Previously gin alone had been offered but Pimm added the spices to make it more palatable and less harsh for his customers.

In 1859, backed by some of his well-heeled clientele, Mr Pimm began marketing Pimm’s No 1 commercially, and during the late 19th Century it took off among the bon viveurs of English fashionable society, and was soon being distributed to wherever the sun didn’t set, reportedly making it as far as the officer’s mess in Khartoum, Sudan.

After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Scotch lent its name to No. 2 cup while No. 3 used brandy, No. 4 rum, No. 5 rye and No. 6 vodka. Of these sequels, the vodka cup and brandy (now called Winter) are the only ones in production while original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity. During a Wimbledon fortnight, some 80,000 half-pints of Pimm’s No 1 Cup are sold to punters who should be watching tennis!

While a number of variations exist, by far the most popular way to serve Pimm’s is with lots of fresh fruit and mint, over ice and topped up with lemonade. Enjoy a Pimm’s at Ginkgo this Summer by glass (35 RMB) and large pitcher (150 RMB).

More about Pimm’s can be found on their website here.

Drink Spotlight: Grasovka – Polish Bison Grass Vodka

Grasovka (Zubrovka)The specific character of this Polish vodka comes from its delicate bison grass flavour – every bottle contains an individual blade of bison grass. The plant grows only in the woods of the national park of Bialowieza on the border between Poland and White Russia. The extremely rare wild European bison are found there as well, hence the name. Numerous attempts to cultivate bison grass in other areas in the world failed, so each blade of bison grass in a bottle of Grasovka is a present from Polish nature!

The product name “vodka” originates from the Old Polish language and was derived from the word “woda” – translated “little water”. Traditionally, vodka was distilled in Poland, Russia, Finland and Sweden. To this day, it is unclear whether the first vodka was made in Russia or Poland; both countries claim to have invented it  and used the cereal-based distillates as medicine.

Historically the alcohol content of vodka was not very high, and combining the distilled liquor with herbs, roots and grasses (in the case of Zubrowka’s vodka) was more usual. Only in the 18th century did vodka became a pure and clear spirit.

We invite you to try Grasovka on your next visit to Ginkgo, as a shot or with a mixer. The delicate flavour from the bison grass wins converts every time!

Live Music: “Chou Dofu Band” – A breath of fresh air for the Beijing jazz scene!

Stinky - The Chou Dofu Band MascotBill Zorn thinks of language as music, and music as language. “When I write a song, and when I play a solo, I try to think of a conversation, with all the pauses, inflection and rhythm that the natural flow of ideas imposes. I try to leave spaces to ‘take a breath’,” even though he plays guitar. Playing for 47 years, he is new to the Beijing scene, but his acoustic fingerstyle guitar has already caught the attention of the local cognoscenti.

Zorn’s latest musical offering, The Chou Dou Fu Band, has the critics all agog (or perhaps agag) again. With two guitars, bass and drum the CDF Band explores the more pungent regions of electric jazz. You won’t turn up your nose at the first whiff; their repertoire of originals and contemporary jazz covers is not your average 1950’s cheesy appetizer, but rather a hearty main course of energetic, danceable music for today. “The great classic jazz used themes from what was then contemporary media. We write most of the tunes we play, but we also reinterpret the great music from the ’60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Actually we’re still looking for great music from the ‘80’s, but haven’t found it yet”, says Zorn. And yes, they do manage to blend some of the acoustic guitar into the mix. But the addition of Dominician bassist Tim Timothy, French drummer Yvan Keller and Cuban guitarist Hansel Gonzalez, The Chou Dou Fu is definitely “zui chou de” (the best!).

For those that don’t already know, Chou Dou Fu is the traditional chinese ‘stinky tofu’, best described as smelling like a combination of roadkill, sewage and old basketball shoes.

Please see the ‘Upcoming Events’ box on the right of our web page for their next performance. Seen them play before? Please give them a star rating below. Post your reviews in the comments.
