Thunder Ghost - Live at Ginkgo
Join us this Saturday from 10:30pm for a night of great live reggae from Andrew Murgatoyd and his band Thunder Ghost.

Lei Gui “Thunder Ghost” is the Chinese word for Reggae translated back into English. This Trans-Pacific reggae mash-up blends the Island style reggae of Canada’s West Coast with East coast Newfoundland-sound all tossed into in a martini shaker with the best horns and drums Beijing has to offer.

Mix that up with the notorious MeiWenti SoundSystem DJ set featuring Thunder Ghost and other live MC’s spitting hot fire on top of roots, dancehall, and dubstep and you’ll be sure to shake your ass until dawn. There are certain to be a few surprise guest musicians as well.

This will be the last party before lead singer Andrew leaves Beijing. Don’t miss them this Saturday night. Free before 9:30pm. 20 RMB after.

The Discounts - Live at Ginkgo
Final Performance: Friday 19 February 2010 10:30pm (Free before 9:30pm. 30RMB with a free drink after.)

Canadian recording artist Neil Conway has been in Beijing for last few months and anyone who caught his previous shows has been suitably impressed. Teamed up with the cream of local musical talent, he has brought his trademark fusion of hip-hop, reggae and funk to Beijing. He will be live at Ginkgo again this Friday and he puts on a great show.

“fiercely talented” -Kerri Breen, The Scope, 2008

“The cramped, narrow bar is churning with bodies dancing, stamping and, I think, even pirouetting. Or maybe it’s merely the earth tilting an extra beat to the funk-reggae party sounds of The Discounts.” -Christopher Frey, Up! Magazine, 2008

“Live, the band combines a great deal of positive energy with extremely solid and creative musicianship that will make you dance and intelligent lyrics to make you think.” -Devon Strang, House of Rock, (drummer for Tom Fun and Slowcoaster), 2002

“a real knife edge of sheer experimental exuberance.” -Mark Vaughan-Jackson, The Telegram, 2001

Live Music: “Mbeewan and the Chi’n'i Band” – The Final Reggae Show!

Mbeewan and the Chi'n'i Band

Join us for Mbeewan’s final show of the Summer before Moussa returns to France!

Mbeewan (Moussa Boudra), a multi-instrumentalist and composer-songwriter for more than 10 years, is the lead singer of iRieTEAM, a French Nu-Roots Reggae band created 5 years ago, and whose first album will be released in 2009.

Reggae, rock, dub, rap and soul are the main influences which guide Mbeewan’s music. The rhythms go from ska to ragga-dancehall, but always keep a dominant reggae-roots touch, which make it a very distinctive and hardly definable reggae.

Mbeewan played with a lot of famous French bands such as:
Dub Incorporation, Aswad, Israel Vibration, Alpha Blondy, Dobacaracol, Bawa, Abdou Day, Kaly Live Dub, Ministère des Affaires Populaires, Kana, Les Wampas, Les Caméléons, Riké, Raspigaous, K2R Riddim, Killa Karltoon…

Mbeewan will be in Beijing this summer backed by Chinese musicians (Chi’n’I Band). They will play iRieTEAM’s original new songs, unpublished works for China, and some covers.

Join us at Ginkgo on 4th September for their final performance!

Free Entry before 9:30pm. 20 RMB after.

Afrokoko Roots
Afrokoko Roots are back! Returning to the Ginkgo stage after their breakout debut here in April, Afrokoko Roots will be playing live at Ginkgo from 10:30pm on Saturday 18th July.

For those not in the know, Afrokoko Roots are an afrobeat and reggae band formed by 33 year old Ghananian/Nigerian percussionist Sunny Dada. They perform afrobeat music in the style of Fela Kuti as well as reggae classics from Bob Marley and others.

Born out of his desire to bring African music to China, Sunny formed the band earlier this year. Sunny is a true multi-instrumentalist including mastery of percussion, trap drumming, piano, trumpet, bass guitar and singing. He is also an accomplished songwriter and composer of instrumental arrangements. His passion for music was ignited when he was young in the church that his father founded, which exposed him to lots of musical styles and gave him an opportunity to hone his skills.

The Ginkgo show will once again feature Sunny on lead vocals, a rhythm section with drums, guitar and bass guitar, horn section with trumpet, sax and trombone, a female backing vocalist and percussion! They also bring hot African dancing girls! Prepare to experience one hell of a show!

Entry is free before 9:30pm and 20 RMB thereafter.
