Live Music: “Mbeewan and the Chi’n’I Band” – Live Reggae Party

Mbeewan and the Chi'n’I Band

Mbeewan (Moussa Boudra), a multi-instrumentalist and composer-songwriter for more than 10 years, is the lead singer of iRieTEAM, a French Nu-Roots Reggae band created 5 years ago, and whose first album will be released in 2009.

Mbeewan is willing to unite people around a message which breaks the borders of reggae and of generations, thanks to its multiple influences.
Reggae, rock, dub, rap and soul are the main influences which guide Mbeewan’s music. The rhythms go from ska to ragga-dancehall, but always keep a dominant reggae-roots touch, which make it a very distinctive and hardly definable reggae.

Mbeewan’s songs are definitely militant and deal with topics such as ecology, religion, wars, racism and crisis linked to identity, as well as conflicts destroying Africa and the Middle-East.

Mbeewan played with a lot of famous French bands such as:
Dub Incorporation, Aswad, Israel Vibration, Alpha Blondy, Dobacaracol, Bawa, Abdou Day, Kaly Live Dub, Ministère des Affaires Populaires, Kana, Les Wampas, Les Caméléons, Riké, Raspigaous, K2R Riddim, Killa Karltoon…

Mbeewan will be in Beijing this summer backed by Chinese musicians (Chi’n’I Band). They will play iRieTEAM’s original new songs, unpublished works for China, and some covers.

Join us at Ginkgo on 1st August for a great reggae show! French reggae is coming to Beijing!!! Don’t miss it!

Live Music: “Pancho & Sal” – The celebrated latin duo are back in Beijing!

Pancho & Sal
Pancho and Sal who were in Beijing for two weeks last month had such a great time that they are coming back into town! For those that missed them last month don’t miss them when they play again at Ginkgo on Friday 17th July. Singing in Spanish, English and French, their music inspires the audiences to participate and sing along. Concerts are designed to be positive and enthusiastic experiences introducing listeners to the beauty of Spanish language, music and culture.

Born in Argentina, Pancho has been writing poems all his life. In the 80’s he moved to Europe, becoming a troubadour style musician, touring in many countries. With the Gypsies in the South of France, he created a new dimension of flamenco guitar and rhythms. After many years of musical exchange with other musicians, his folk music has influences from country, blues, reggae and south American folk.

Sal, who was born in England and raised in Canada, started playing accordion and clarinet at an early age. She compliments Pancho’s music with accordion, shakers, chachas, bombo and guitar.

The two met in 1984 in a town square in Cuzco, Peru. It was also the beginning of a musical partnership that has endured and endeared the couple to so many audiences.

Pancho and Sal’s live shows have a quality and atmosphere that can be hard to capture, other than by being there. Don’t miss the talented duo, joined together with friend Kamila Nasr, when they play at Ginkgo.

Afrokoko Roots
Afrokoko Roots are back! Returning to the Ginkgo stage after their breakout debut here in April, Afrokoko Roots will be playing live at Ginkgo from 10:30pm on Saturday 18th July.

For those not in the know, Afrokoko Roots are an afrobeat and reggae band formed by 33 year old Ghananian/Nigerian percussionist Sunny Dada. They perform afrobeat music in the style of Fela Kuti as well as reggae classics from Bob Marley and others.

Born out of his desire to bring African music to China, Sunny formed the band earlier this year. Sunny is a true multi-instrumentalist including mastery of percussion, trap drumming, piano, trumpet, bass guitar and singing. He is also an accomplished songwriter and composer of instrumental arrangements. His passion for music was ignited when he was young in the church that his father founded, which exposed him to lots of musical styles and gave him an opportunity to hone his skills.

The Ginkgo show will once again feature Sunny on lead vocals, a rhythm section with drums, guitar and bass guitar, horn section with trumpet, sax and trombone, a female backing vocalist and percussion! They also bring hot African dancing girls! Prepare to experience one hell of a show!

Live Music: “Daisy Sweetgrass” – Siren and songwriter performing American Roots music

Daisy Sweetgrass
Next Performance: Thursday 26th February 2010 – 9:30pm (Free Entry)

Daisy Sweetgrass (a.k.a Christine Laskowski) is the result of an affair between the wife of Presbyterian minister and a door-to-door flower seed salesman on a steamy August afternoon in 1984. Her mother Evangeline told her that he had a passion for 7th century Persian poetry, smelled of pine trees and damp wool, and had given her a packet of daisy seeds as a parting gift. As per the origins of Daisy’s musical talent, Evangeline could only tell her that he had a very pleasant hum.

But that was many years ago.

These days Daisy’s in Beijing. She’s playing guitar and singing American roots music- from traditional bluegrass ballads to Swahili folk songs, as well as songs of her own. With her infectious energy, sparkle in her eye, and a voice that’ll make you swoon, Daisy Sweetgrass puts on a show well worth watching.

You can listen to some of her songs here:

Daisy Sweetgrass – “Never Lonelier”
Daisy Sweetgrass – “Hutong Girl”
Daisy Sweetgrass – “Jolene” by Dolly Parton

You can also see her website here: www.daisysweetgrass.com

Drink Spotlight: Hendrick’s Gin – Loved by a handful of people across the world

Hendrick's GinGin is distilled grain alcohol flavoured with different herbs and spices known as botanicals. The main flavour ingredient in gin is juniper berries, which gives gin its distinctive dry taste and aroma. Other botanicals can include coriander, angelica root, citrus peels and liquorice.

Hendricks Gin is handcrafted in small batches in small batches in Ayrshire, Scotland using a 19th century pot still. Instead of boiling the ingredients like many other gins, the still “bathes” them in vapours at a leisurely pace – the more leisurely the disillation process, the more intense the flavour of the finished gin. The recipe for Hendricks Gin includes traditional botanicals such as juniper, coriander and citrus peels and an unexpected infusion of cucumber and rose petals which gives Hendricks Gin its truly unique and unusual flavour.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the bottle is squat and brown and distinctive – almost a nod to gin’s medicinal roots, because it looks like something you’d buy from an apothecary. The second thing is that instead of crowing about how their gin is the greatest thing since the polio vaccination, the little pamphlet that comes with the bottle almost dares you to try it. With slogans like “It is not for everybody” and “Preferred by 1 out of 1000 gin drinkers,” Hendrick’s definitely stays away from typical marketing techniques, though it does say Hendrick’s is “loved by a tiny handful of people all over the world.” But the question is whether the gin itself lives up to the quirky claims and dry humor?

The answer is unequivocally “Yes.” As soon as you pop the cork out of the bottle, there is definitely a juniper smell, but instead of the industrial tang found so often found in other gins, the odor is pleasant and mixed with a light citrusy smell. Just by taking that first whiff you know you are in the presence of something special. As for the taste, the only adjective we can come up with is “velvety.” There are the typical juniper/evergreen tastes, combined with citrus and even a mint undertone.

If you’re a gin drinker, someone who typically sticks to a Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray, we highly recommend giving Hendrick’s a try on your next visit to Ginkgo. The best way to enjoy it is with tonic, served, not altogether surprisingly, with a slice of cucumber. You’ll be glad you did. Don’t just drink it – savor it, sip it, enjoy it.

Live Music: “The Redbucks” – Beijing’s most notorious and rowdy American bluegrass band!

The Redbucks

Hailing from East to West, North to South, the Redbucks are Beijing’s most notorious and rowdy group of American Bluegrass musicians, and a sibling act to the The Moonshine Apothecary.  Their robust and tender sound brings to mind the speed and force of a freight train combined with the sweetness of two lovers picnicking in a cherry orchard on spring afternoon.  Hot licks, sweet harmonies, hootin’, hollerin’, stompin’, clappin’, and the good ole’ times…

Check out their MySpace page here: www.myspace.com/theredbucks

Free Entry before 9:30pm. 20 RMB after.

Please see the ‘Upcoming Events’ box on the right of our web page for their next performance. Seen them play before? Please give them a star rating below. Post your reviews in the comments.
